Tuath evokes the rugged nature of the sea. Sea squalls, crashing waves and heaving winds perpetuate the landscape of the North Atlantic. Green, black and purple mountains jut from the water towards the sky and carry on their backs the hardy little sheep with the short tails and the colourful coats.
North Atlantic Short Tailed sheep have roamed the hillsides and shorelines of Northern Europe for thousands of years. Said to have travelled the region with the vikings from Norway, these tough little sheep today have between 13-30 breeds, nearly all rare breeds, despite their hardy natures. The North Atlantic Native Sheep & Wool Conference is held annually in a different location. The aim is to discuss the breeds and to share stories of success in farming, marketing and maintaining the sheep. This year the conference was hosted by Uist Wool and to celebrate we spun a North Atlantic Short Tail blend: Tuath.
Blended from 10 North Atlantic Short Tail wools, this characterful yarn has a little bit of all the best characteristics- strong, soft, and pulsing with natural colours, this is truly a North Atlantic yarn. Spun from Hebridean, Soay & Boreray (breeds from the Outer Hebrides), plus Shetland, North Ronaldsay & Manx Loaghton from the UK, we also blended in Gotland, Icelandic, Faroese and Villsau to create this deliciously oceanic double knitting yarn that is truly a one-off creation!
